POSITION SUMMARY

The Research and Development division of Educational Testing Service seeks an Accessibility Engineer to join our growing Accessibility, Standards, and Assistive Technology Group.

Accessibility Engineers implement and contribute to the design and development of accessible, standards-based assessments in support of both research and testing programs. They consult with research scientists in the application, development, and specification of technical accessibility standards, based on requirements for specific disabilities, assistive technologies, and assessment validity. The successful candidate should understand key accessibility standards & requirements, and be prepared to consider their application to assessment delivery, including students’ use of assistive technologies.

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

With guidance from systems staff, contribute to the planning, development, maintenance, and/or deployment of major components of highly-complex applications, systems, or computing environments

Produce effective, medium-scale technology solutions to accessibility challenges that support a targeted set of research and operational projects, using specified networks, operating systems, hardware platforms and development environments,.

For assigned applications and systems, work directly with peers, management and project staff to address technical accessibility challenges by developing technical specifications and test cases, confirming functionality/usability, and responding to requests for technical accessibility expertise and assistance.

Lead the preparation of technical documentation for assigned accessibility-related applications, systems or computing environments and contribute to planning documents and status reports related to research technology development activities for peers and immediate management.

Through training seminars and other self-development activities, maintain continuing awareness of recent advances in accessibility, standards, and assistive technologies. Identify and evaluate new accessibility technologies and standards by gathering and organizing technical information in support of acquisition/adoption decisions and client and/or vendor negotiations.

Adhere to ETS and applicable technical accessibility standards, in addition to industry standards for technical quality, data/source-code storage, and application/systems security.

Experience and Skills
EDUCATION

A Master’s degree in Computer Science or Information Technology is necessary.

EXPERIENCE

Six years of progressively responsible information technology and systems development experience is required including a track record in accessibility with four years of diverse experience in digital accessibility, including design, evaluation (testing), and implementation of accessible interfaces including two years of active participation in accessibility related standards work.

Other Requirements:

A strong background in web development and experience in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, SVG, WAI-ARIA, and the application of WCAG 2.0 AA requirements.

A strong background in the use of assistive technologies across multiple platforms, including screen readers, magnification, and read aloud tools.

A strong background in the use of accessibility testing tools and methods.
