Job Summary:
• As part of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) general supervision, this position will be working with all ESS teams and any member involved with special education.
• Work under aggressive timelines with IDEA-funded personnel in units and sections throughout the agency. As such, this position will act with significant autonomy, lead projects for generating report verbiage, and work with multiple parallel deadlines as necessitated by state or federal initiatives.
• Requires comprehensive writing skills, excellent copy, editing, and proofing skills, and be able to translate outcomes to simplify stakeholder consumption, public posting requirements, and to generate feedback.
• Main point of contact for the ESS website and documentation standards for the unit, as well as train the ESS team on these topics.
• Occasional in-state travel is required for this position.

The Arizona Department of Education currently utilizes a hybrid work environment, with up to two days of remote work (contingent upon business needs). Candidates should apply with an ability and willingness to work in-office up to five days per week as business needs necessitate.

Job Duties:
• Develop, research, write, organize, and standardize all special education policies and procedures and project documentation as required by the Office of Special Education Programs or state constituents.
• Work with a variety of stakeholders both internally and externally and understanding all aspects of special education implementation in the state.
• Standardize incoming and outgoing communication for ESS, including the implementation of communication processes being 508 compliant, consistent branding, and tone.
• Develop and facilitate training sessions for ESS staff related to policies and procedures, accessibility, and website.
• Create guidance documents for staff to use when creating documents or training materials.
• Ensure that all ESS documentation for policies and procedures are updated, cataloged, and under the appropriate retention guidelines.
• Oversee the website organization and digital storage organization to ensure consistency with legal requirements and reporting requirements.
• Other duties as assigned as related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge in:
• High-level understanding of state and federal laws and regulations
• Principles and practices of copy editing and proofreading
• Conceptual understanding of creative policies and procedures
• A Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Communications, English, Publishing, a related field, or equivalent experience to substitute for the degree, is required

Skills in:
• Technical writing and editing
• Develop and facilitate training sessions
• Process development and implementation
• Create info graphics and project summaries
• Intermediate skill in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel

Ability to:
• Plan, organize, coordinate, and prioritize
• Problem-solve document processes from verbal/written sources
• Make decisions independently with available knowledge and resources
• Lead small and large groups with successful outcomes
• Develop content based on needs for professional development purposes
• Break down, summarize and communicate information to a variety of stakeholder groups while maintaining a consistent professional tone of the unit

Selective Preference(s):
Preference will be given to those applicants with:
• Experience working on technical documentation
• Proofreading experience
• Special education experience
• Special education degree

Retirement:
You will be required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) upon your 27th week of employment, subject to waiting period. On or shortly after, your first day of employment you will be provided with enrollment instructions and effective date.
