Position Summary
CAMI Health, a program of the Public Health Institute (PHI), is looking for a high school intern to join our team for an internship that is expected to start on December 2, 2024 and end on or before February 28, 2025.
The high school intern will gain hands-on experience in web design, WordPress, digital communications, and public health by working with CAMI Health to assess and update the IMPT and CAMI Health websites. This experience will emphasize creating user-friendly, modern, and accessible web environments with a clear vision and mission.
This is a remote temporary part-time position that is expected to work 12.5% FTE (5 hours/week) on average and last no more than 89 days.
Full pay range for this position: $17.20 to $19.62 per hour. The starting wage for this position is $17.20 per hour.
Learning Goals:
Develop Foundational Business and Project Management Skills:
Understand how to structure and write an effective website design proposal.
Practice project management techniques, such as setting timelines, defining deliverables, and tracking progress.
Gain experience working within a public health team and engaging in professional communication.
Develop Web Design Skills:
Learn how to use WordPress or other web development tools to create user-friendly, visually appealing websites.
Explore how to reorganize and streamline content for a digital audience.
Experiment with design software to create mockups and prototypes before implementation.
Introduction to Nonprofit and Public Health Communications:
Learn about nonprofit messaging strategies and how web design can effectively support an organizations mission.
Explore techniques to increase awareness and engagement, highlighting donation opportunities.
Learn Accessibility and Compliance Standards:
Familiarize with NIH 508 compliance standards for accessible web design.
Learn to implement necessary compliance changes to ensure the website is accessible to all users.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Phase I: IMPT and CAMI Health Website Assessment and Planning
Learning Activities:
Conduct a comprehensive review of the existing website structures, identifying areas for improvement in user experience and succinct public health messaging.
Draft a website improvement proposal for streamlining and restructuring content based on website goals and user needs.
Gather feedback from CAMI Health’s team on the proposal to refine recommendations and improve communication skills.
Assessment: Evaluation of the intern’s proposal, looking at clarity, feasibility, and alignment with CAMI Health’s mission. Feedback from the team on professionalism and presentation skills will also be considered.
Phase II: IMPT and CAMI Health Website Redesign
Learning Activities:
Begin redesigning the IMPT and CAMI Health website to reflect a “start-up” feel that emphasizes vision, mission, and opportunities for support.
Address any accessibility compliance issues following NIH 508 standards, with an emphasis on understanding the role of accessibility in nonprofit settings.
Test new designs and gather feedback from CAMI’s feedback group to assess improvement in user experience.
Assessment: Review of the intern’s progress through user-testing reports, final design quality, and completion of accessibility standards. Intern will present their work and reflections on challenges and successes.
Overall Internship Assessment: Intern performance will be evaluated through:
Quality of deliverables, including the website proposal, redesign, and final analysis report.
Feedback from CAMI Health’s team members on the intern’s collaboration, communication, and adaptability.
Self-assessment and reflection on personal growth and skill acquisition.
Minimum Qualifications
A high school senior or junior.
Other Qualifications
Computer experience and an interest in website design.
Ability to work effectively in a remote-work environment.
Ability to maintain consistent availability and communicate over virtual communications platforms (such as Slack, Zoom, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Outlook), and productivity as expected in an office environment.
