Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

We partner with faculty and academic units to develop and market robust online courses and degree programs. Our primary goal is to provide online learning opportunities that empower students and impact the greater community through new technologies and innovative curriculum design.

We also serve students in other important ways. We manage the Master’s in Applied Arts and Sciences and the university’s Summer Session, work with visiting students, and provide access to courses for professional development and personal enrichment.
Position Summary

Proactively and systematically addresses overall compliance issues and be responsible for ensuring online courses or courses with online components are compliant with University, state, and federal policies, such as ADA, Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and WCAG 2.0.

Partner with all units on campus responsible for teaching online classes to ensure each course being taught is in compliance; Serve as a point of contact for accessibility and provisioning questions regarding online courses, courses with online components.

Provides educational support to distance education faculty. Creates online, face-to-face and/or blended customized training courses and products. Teaches instructional sessions for faculty, teaching assistants and graders on distance learning teaching styles and methodologies based on individual or group needs. Conducts training needs assessments and evaluates training effectiveness. Develops strategies to streamline paper processes. Recommends new technical services to improve faculty support services.

Partner with all units on campus responsible for teaching online classes to promote awareness and educate administrative staff on current and emerging online accessibility design and provision issues, and to help faculty create and maintain fully accessible online courses.

Assemble a working group of UNCG faculty and staff (ITC, faculty, OARS, library, etc) to discuss and develop compliant online accessibility design and provision resources and news; Partner with other university entities, e.g. Office of Accessibility Resources & Services, Office of General Counsel, UNCG Online, colleges, schools, etc., to recommend and develop appropriate regulations, guidelines, procedures, and best practices that ensure the accessibility of online courses and course components.

Present and participate in university based, regional and national conferences and workshops on issues related to accessibility in online higher education courses.

Develop and maintain online resource for accessibility and usability content dealing with online courses and courses with online components; Develop, maintain, and disseminate a course accessibility checklist (with a working definition of what it means to be compliant for online classes) to be used by faculty and staff during course development and review. The position will organize and lead working groups and committees within the university.
Minimum Qualifications

-Master’s degree required
-Extensive knowledge and experience with state and federal accessibility requirements along with disability law as applies to higher education
-Extensive knowledge and experience with resources that meet accessibility requirements and/or how to enable resources to meet such requirements
-Demonstrated leadership, collaboration, and negotiation skills required
-Commitment to accessibility issues required
-Effective verbal and written communication skills required
-Ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a higher education setting required
-Ability to work on campus at UNCG and not remotely
Preferred Qualifications

-Knowledge and experience with accessible Web design, principles of Universal Design and understanding of accessibility issues related to emerging web technologies, multimedia and learning environments preferred
-Knowledge and experience with assistive technologies (e.g. screen readers, speech input devices, and text readers) preferred
-Experience with HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, XML and web content management systems preferred
-Experience reviewing and remediating online courses and/or websites to ensure accessibility and usability compliance preferred
-Experience organizing and managing professional development workshops preferred
-Experience teaching online or hybrid courses, and/or supporting online or hybrid instructors and students preferred.
