Digital Accessibility Coordinator

Definition of Class

This position will be the University's primary expert in accessibility of digital services. The University has a huge digital footprint which must be made and kept compliant with accessibility standards. The incumbent will need to make significant independent decisions to prioritize the distribution of work and resources across this footprint to maximize benefit for University constituent groups and minimize regulatory risk. The incumbent must maintain an understanding of digital accessibility standards and be able to implement those standards across diverse technical systems.

Examples of Work Performed

⦁ Studies and understands applicable standards as they change over time.
⦁ Assesses the compliance of university digital services (including those procured from vendors) with accessibility standards.
⦁ Prioritizes and leads efforts to remediate accessibility issues with digital services.
⦁ Maintains constant communication and cooperation between offices.
⦁ Develops and implements digital accessibility strategies as part of a coherent portfolio of services provided across IT and Access & Compliance.
⦁ Builds, implements, and maintains workflow systems to address accessibility needs in ways that make sense to UM faculty, staff, and students.
⦁ Hires, assesses, and provides day to day supervision of the Accessibility Specialist.
⦁ Develops and implements plans for continuing professional development of the Accessibility Specialist.
⦁ Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required

Essential Functions

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1. Implements accessibility related standards and laws, including WCAG, ADA Section 508, and WAI-ARIA across the University's entire portfolio of digital services.
2. Coordinates digital accessibility services and activities of the offices of Information Technology, Academic Outreach, and Access and Compliance.
3. Supervises the activities of other digital accessibility staff.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field


AND


Experience:

Three (3) years of experience related to the duties described above



Substitution Statement:
Related experience may be substituted for education on a basis set forth and approved by the Department of Human Resources.
